At-Will Employment

At-Will Employment

In the majority of states the general rule is: in the absence of an employment contract for a specified duration, both the employer and the employee are free to terminate the relationship for any reason, or for no reason at all. At-will status may be modified, however, by oral representations and written statements. Adequate contract disclaimers and at-will statements in employee handbooks can minimize the risk that such statements created express or implied employment contracts.
